ASHEletics A Booming Success

Shepparton Sports Stadium came to life with the sounds of over 230 primary students playing indigenous games and having fun at the “ASHEletics” traditional indigenous games carnival on Thursday 18th June 2009.

Hosted by the Academy of Sport Health and Education (ASHE), “ASHEletics” is aimed at giving the region’s indigenous youth a better understanding of traditional indigenous games and also celebrating indigenous culture and performance.

This year the traditional indigenous games played included Wulijini, Pulyugee, Kai, Kolap, Tarnambai, Bowitgee, Jumpinpin, and Kangaroo Hop. Other sports also played included AFL (which was played as indigenous Marn Grook), Netball and Rugby.

ASHE Director Justin Mohamed said the games provided a wonderful opportunity for the ASHE Certificate II, III and IV students to demonstrate what they had learnt through the academy.

“ASHEletics is organised by the ASHE students through the business component of their studies in Sport and Community Recreation. It provides a platform for them to display skills such as organisation, event management, problem solving and team work,” Justin said.

“Primary students attending the event included all levels from Prep through to Grade 6 and therefore the activities were targeted specifically to suit the different age levels,” he added.

ASHE Certificate IV Student Joel Giles said, “This is a unique event for our indigenous people. It gives us a chance to have a good time, remembering the history of our families and hopefully carrying some of our traditions on for the future,” Joel said.

“The performance by Tjimba and The Yung Warriors was a great way to finish off the event and showed the kids some of the things you can achieve if you put your mind to it,” Joel added.
