Rosaline Bryant - ASHE Student Certificate III in Sport & 2008 ASHE Student Achievement Award Winner

Rosaline Bryant"I first found out about ASHE from friends that already attended ASHE. I wasn’t really into school and I wanted to continue my studies but I just didn’t know where I would find something I would really be into. Then I decided to come in with a friend one day and I loved the people and the thought of ASHE. I find that ASHE is a very good thing for people who don’t know what they want to do in life. It is a good place to study and you can work at the same time. As a fulltime student at ASHE I was asked to do a work placement which I really enjoyed. I find that ASHE is great way to set yourself up for life."

Shae Parsons - 2006 Certificate II Full-Time Student

"I found ASHE to be a very beneficial program, especially with all the extra certificates and qualifications we could get like First Aid and Food Handling as well as overall Certificate II in Sport. The netball specialisation also really helped me with my own game throughout the season. All staff are very helpful and ASHE is a very enjoyable place to study. We did a lot of different activities throughout the year including mentoring in schools, camps and also our trip to CrocFest which was great fun. I'm back at ASHE in 2007 to study Certificate III so come and join me!"

George Briggs - 2006 Certificate III Full-Time Student

"I was sold on the idea of attending ASHE because of it's focus on education which is a vital asset, and sport, which I love. At the time of enrolment I had nothing much on, so instead of wasting time I thought I might as well give the course a go. Also it was community orientated, so I felt comfortable. It was great that I was achieving something with friends and family who I grew up with in Shepparton, so I got as much satisfaction watching them succeed as I would with myself. ASHE gave me confidence to try new things because I was exposed to new things every day when I went to ASHE. This year I have enrolled at University to study Bachelor of Education (Primary) because of my new found confidence."

Samara Ahmat - 2005 Certificate III Full-Time Student

“ASHE was good for me. The goal setting was probably the most effective part. I’d done that sort of thing before at school but it was probably the first time in my life I’ve really followed through on that. The things I worked on were helping out with my sister’s wedding, which went really well; and it’s heaps easier now I’m able to drive. Before I was always waiting on my sister but now I have more control. It will be even better once I get my own car. I really enjoyed classes, especially with Fiona and Paul. It was also good getting more experience in the netball with Janette. If she knew what position you played in netball she would really focus on that which was helpful.”

Roland Atkinson - 2005 ASHE Student of the Year Certificate III

Roland Atkinson“A lot about ASHE was different to what I had experienced before. I was surprised about how much ASHE staff wanted the students to turn up, especially by making breakfasts and lunches available (which made me very happy and helped me save a few dollars in my pocket!). It wasn’t just that though, all the staff seemed to work hard to get everyone to turn up every day to make sure things were going well and the quality of what we learned in the course was all really good and there were some great skills to learn. It was really good for the young kids especially and it was great for some of us older blokes to be able to show the way for them sometimes. Going to the gym was great and I also went a fair bit during my own time which I really enjoyed. It’s just a good facility at ASHE and a good environment and the staff really support us but push us to do well also. And it was also just a good social place to come. You already knew most of the people you were studying with, but you got a closer friendship out of it all. Overall it was a good experience and all the teachers were really good as well. I had no complaints at all.”

Adam Briggs – 2005 Certificate III Full-Time Student

Adam BriggsAdam Briggs was like a lot of young people coming out of their VCE. While Year 12 was behind him, and he was interested in pursuing further education, Adam wasn’t exactly sure at the end of 2004 which path he wanted to travel. He certainly wasn’t sure enough of his future ambitions to sign up for a university degree but didn’t want to waste a year or more sorting himself out either. That is why an ASHE certificate course made a lot of sense to Adam. “I still needed a bit of time to work myself out but didn’t want to waste my time,’’ Adam said. Adam completed Certificate III in Sport (Career Oriented Participation) with flying colours, proving in the process that you don’t have to be a sports nut to succeed at ASHE. Adam’s first love, in fact, is his music and he fronts his own successful hip-hop band 912 which enjoys a strong following throughout Victoria and looks to have an exciting future. With his ASHE certificate behind him, Adam is now looking at a move to Melbourne where he is hoping to further pursue his music career with the JMC Academy in Melbourne. “ASHE for me was just a good, solid and enjoyable educational experience at a time where that was exactly what I was looking for,” Adam said. “I got a lot out of my time there, found the staff really supportive and hope I can have some good times ahead of me.” Adam was also happy to pick up his Level 2 First Aid qualification as part of his ASHE study. “That’s a pretty good thing to have behind me. You never know when that sort of thing is going to come in handy.”

Jasmine Day - 2005 ASHE Certificate III Full-Time Student

Jasmine Day“I was working at Rumbalara Aboriginal Co-operative in the Administration area when I noticed a flyer for ASHE. It got my attention because I had recognised some of the people in the photos. I found out more information through Jason – the ASHE Student Support Officer -who was constantly encouraging my parents and I about getting me to do the course. I thought it was a great opportunity to do another certificate and to gain more qualifications. My main concern was being the only girl in the classes. I had heard in the past the classes had all male students so I was feeling a bit uneasy. But that was put to rest when I was told other female students had enrolled. The classes were interesting and educational as well as fun and entertaining. Having all the classes at ASHE offices made the students feel more comfortable and relaxed and in turn had better outcomes.
The workers were laidback and easy to approach which helped the students and staff develop close friendships. It was made more comfortable for the female students when Leonie came on board as the female Student Support Officer; now we had someone to talk to. ASHE was a great experience for me. I brushed up on old skills while learning new ones. I also have the opportunity of working as a Student Support Officer at ASHE during the first half of this year and am really looking forward to that challenge.”

Brad Firebrace – 2005 Certificate III Full-Time Student

Brad Firebrace“ASHE provided a good environment to learn new skills, and brush up on old ones. It was flexible for me to study and work at the same time, along with football commitments. The classes were practical and enjoyable. The friendly environment provided by Phil, Justin, Jason, Adrian and the rest of the ASHE staff make it easy to enjoy.”

Leroy Jackson – 2005 ASHE Student of the Year Certificate II

Leroy Jackson“It (ASHE) was definitely better than what I thought it would be. At first it was a bit of a surprise with all the classroom stuff that I wasn’t real keen on, but I started to see where it all fitted in and it was pretty good after that. It’s good the way sport comes into the whole thing; and footy tipping was always fun, especially if you won! There were some days I couldn’t make it to class, or I had to go away, but the staff helped by making sure I could catch up when I needed to and it was a great sense of achievement in the end to finally make it through all of the Certificate II course and look forward to starting on Certificate III in 2006.”
