ASHE Community Initiatives
ASHE students and staff have much to offer the community with their youth, enthusiasm and connection to indigenous culture. We seek to share this in a variety of ways which not only promote community development but also the development of our students in real-life situations.
ASHEletics
ASHEletics is the major
annual community initiative of ASHE. It brings together primary
school students, their support staff and families for a day of traditional
games, dance, entertainment and fellowship. All ASHE students play a
major role in planning and delivering the event.
ASHEletics 2010 is scheduled for Shepparton Sports Stadium on Wednesday 16 June.
GOWRIE ST PRIMARY SCHOOL
ASHE students have the
chance to gain casual employment facilitating lunchtime activities for students
at the Gowrie St Primary School. With large numbers of
indigenous students and its own Koori Annexe known as Manega, Gowrie Street
provides an ideal environment for ASHE students to develop their leadership and
group facilitation skills.
ASHE SCHOOLS PROGRAM
Along with ASHEletics and
the Gowrie St
program, ASHE staff and students also deliver a range of “one-off” or
“short-term” activity programs for schools each year.
ACTIVE AFTER SCHOOL COMMUNITIES PROGRAM
As part of their courses at
ASHE, all Certificate III and IV students complete training as community
coaches for the Active After School Communities coach program. Students then have the
chance to go on and gain employment as AASC coaches.
CULTURAL SAFETY PANELS
The University
of Melbourne has medical and dental
students who complete a regional placement as part of their training with the School of Rural Health in Shepparton. As part of this training the
students are given the chance to ask questions and learn from a Koori panel
regarding issues or care and support specific to indigenous people.
ASHE students are regularly invited and paid to sit on these panels.
FAMILY CARE
Up to three ASHE students
are employed to deliver an all abilities activity program one afternoon per
week for Family Care in terms two, three and four. All ASHE students complete
disability awareness training in the lead up to application for this program.
EMPLOYMENT PARTNERSHIPS
With the growing emphasis on
work experience in ASHE training, ASHE is continuing to develop a range of
partnerships with employers in Greater Shepparton. These include Greater
Shepparton City Council (Aquamoves and Shepparton Sports Stadium), Rumbalara
Aboriginal Cooperative, the University of Melbourne – Goulburn Valley Partnerships,
ValleySport, Family Care and Gowrie
St Primary School.
INDIVIDUAL PLANNING
ASHE students are all encouraged to set up individual development plans as part of their participation in the program. ASHE is also happy to work with non-students to create their own development plans using the “GROW” process. Community members interested in undertaking this planning should contact ASHE on 5823 6600 .
